For the founder of PiaPunk Design, sustainability isn’t just a trend – it’s her way of life. What began as a personal mission to reduce household waste quickly grew into a business built on playful designs and eco-conscious values. Meet Inge Schwab, the creator behind these fun, whimsical household goods.

The Inspiration Behind the Brand

“I have two kids and I love cooking as much as sewing and knitting,” she explains. “After grocery shopping, I always came home with so much packaging, mainly plastic. So I started making reusable grocery bags and produce bags.”

Seeing how small swaps could make a meaningful impact sparked something for Inge. “Finding it rewarding to be able to reduce trash by simple changes inspired me to start making more reusable swaps for everyday use,” she says.

The brand name carries a personal story, too. “When our oldest daughter was a baby she had little hair and it stood straight up, so we called her PiaPunk,” she recalls. “When she started daycare, I had to label her clothes. Some sweaters and hats were handmade by me, so I ordered labels with the name PiaPunk. The name just stuck.”

Aesthetic and Approach

Describing her style in just a few words, she chooses: “Modern and playful.”

Her creative process reflects that spirit. Every product begins with a real-life need. “The idea for a new product always comes from an item I use every day that I think could be replaced by a reusable product,” she says. After researching materials and creating prototypes, she turns to her inner circle for honest feedback. “Once it’s approved by family and friends, I start making them to sell.”

Inspiration From Everyday Life

Inge’s inspiration comes from right at home. “Everyday life,” she says simply, is her greatest muse.

For Inge, this means living more simply and reducing waste with functional reusables for everyday use: handmade kitchen towels, her table napkins, beeswax wraps in lots of sizes, bread bags, produce bags, laundry bags, reusable coffee filters, totes, cleaning supplies, and the list doesn’t end there! Inge’s goods are often made from overstock or left over fabric in bright, joyful patterns. She takes particular pride in using fabric that would otherwise be destined for a landfill.

Sustainability at the Heart

Sustainability is the brand’s foundation. “Sustainability is the key factor why PiaPunk Design exists,” she emphasizes. “Not only creating reusable products but also trying to be respectful with the resources we have is a main goal.”

This philosophy shows up in every fabric scrap and reclaimed material she finds new use for. And she’s not alone; the local response has been powerful. “There is a local community with awareness of more eco-friendly living, and it is growing.”

What Sets Pia Punk Apart

While Inge stays humble about distinguishing herself, the heart of her work lies in creating pieces that are both beautiful and functional. “Creating little art pieces in the form of sustainable products for everyday use,” she says, has been one of her proudest accomplishments. “Making useful products and bringing joy into your house by using cute and modern designs.”

Like many creative entrepreneurs, she’s faced hurdles—especially on the business side. “The creative process and making the products is the fun part. I still have to learn a lot about marketing and how to run a small business,” she admits. Her strategy? Steady persistence. “I work through it by making little steps, but always forward.”

A Future in This Community

Central Ohio’s creative ecosystem has played a part in her growth. “Meeting other creative artists and makers is great for exchange and motivation,” she says.

While the next chapter for Pia Punk Design unfolds, her vision remains to spread awareness about the availability and simplicity of reusable options. We are inspired by PiaPunk’s commitment to sustainability, community, and designs that make everyday life a little brighter.
