How can we live in deeper harmony with the land, water, and ecosystems that sustain us here in Central Ohio? That’s the question at the heart of the Central Ohio Bioregional Working Group, and it’s what we’ll be exploring together at our next gathering.
The Central Ohio Bioregional Working Group, launched in June 2025, is a growing collaboration of individuals and organizations—including Simply Living, Ohio Community Rights Network, Leaves for Wildlife, the Central Ohio Reuse Coalition, and the Care and Share Timebank. Together, we are exploring how to strengthen our bioregion by focusing on food systems, water sources, energy, and culture at the local level.
This month we are honored to welcome Luke Messinger, CEO of Rapid 5, as our featured guest. Rapid 5 stands for Rivers And Parks Imagination Design – the “5” represents the five major waterways that flow north to south through Franklin County – Big Darby Creek, Scioto River, Olentangy River, Alum Creek, and Big Walnut Creek. Rapid 5’s mission is to connect people and communities through Central Ohio’s waterways, parks, and natural assets, weaving them into one of the largest interconnected park systems in the nation. Previously, Luke served as Executive Director of Dawes Arboretum for 24 years, where he grew it into a nationally recognized center for botanical science, plant conservation, habitat restoration, and education. Luke’s leadership at the intersection of conservation, community, and regional planning will inspire fresh ideas for how bioregional thinking can take root here at home.
