This summer, Simply Living and Central Ohio Women in the Trades (CoWIT) are thrilled to launch a hands-on, practical workshop series designed to help Central Ohioans weatherproof their homes, reduce energy costs, and build resilience in the face of climate change.
The DIY Weatherization & Climate Adaptation Course Series kicks off on Saturday, June 28, 2025, with the Intro to Tools class. Leading the way is Chrissy Marsey, a seasoned IBEW Union Electrician, mom, and instructor with a passion for sustainability and empowering others with practical, DIY home improvement skills. We caught up with Chrissy ahead of the first session to hear more about her background—and why this work matters now more than ever.
Q: Chrissy, we’re so excited to have you leading this course! Can you tell us a little about your background?
I’m a journeyman electrician through IBEW and have been working in the trade for 15 years. Most of my professional experience is in the commercial and industrial sectors, but residential work is a personal passion of mine—it’s where I love helping people feel more confident in their homes. I completed a five-year apprenticeship to earn my journeyman status. I’m also a proud mom to a 13-year-old son, and a pet mom to Rex, a mixed breed pup, plus five cats!
Q: The series starts with Intro to Tools on June 28. What can folks expect from that first class?
We’ll cover the basics—common hand and power tools, their correct names, safe use, and how to apply them properly. Having a solid foundation is essential when starting any home project. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed just walking down the tool aisle, this class is for you!
Q: Why is DIY weatherization important right now?
Climate change is presenting real challenges, and we need to adapt. Learning how to weatherize your home isn’t just about saving money on energy bills—though that’s definitely a plus. It’s about making sure we’re equipped to care for ourselves and our families as the world around us changes. We’ll talk about what works, what doesn’t, and the products and practices that can make your home more efficient, safer, and more resilient.
Q: What are you most excited to teach in the rest of the series?
As an electrician, I’m especially excited to share what I call the “magic of electricity.” It’s something most of us rely on every day without really understanding how it works. My goal is to make it approachable and empower folks to work safely and confidently with electrical systems.
Q: Who should sign up for this course?
Anyone! Whether you rent or own, whether you’re a total beginner or someone looking to brush up on your skills—this series is for you. If you want to understand how your home systems work, feel more prepared for extreme weather, or take on small home improvement projects with confidence, you’ll benefit from this series.
Q: Any final thoughts for folks considering signing up?
This is a relaxed, supportive space where all skill levels are welcome. Our goal is to build your confidence and knowledge while having fun. You’ll leave with a handy reference packet on tools, plus practical experience that you can build on for years to come.
Chrissy’s expertise and approachable style make her the perfect guide for this series. Whether you’re looking to cut energy costs, or prepare for an unpredictable climate, you’ll leave each session feeling empowered and informed.
