The only kinds of fights worth fighting are those you are going to lose, because somebody has to fight them and lose and lose and lose until someday, somebody who believes as you do wins. In order for somebody to win an important, major fight 100 years hence, a lot of other people have got to be willing – for the sheer fun and joy of it – to go right ahead and fight, knowing you’re going to lose. You mustn’t feel like a martyr. You’ve got to enjoy it. ~ I.F. Stone

TED Talk of the Week: Allan Savory: How to fight desertification and reverse climate change
Can managing cattle and moving them on deteriorating grasslands to mimic what nature once did to create them SOLVE THE CLIMATE CHANGE CRISIS by sequestering excess carbon from the atmosphere? This is the claim being made… and Peter Byck, author and producer of “Carbon Nation” agrees and says it is the one approach that gives him hope. That’s a strong endorsement. Here’s the blurb: “Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert,” begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And it’s happening to about two-thirds of the world’s grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes — and his work so far shows — that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert. Allan Savory works to promote holistic management in the grasslands of the world.

If you’re really into farmers markets, you might also be interested in the OSU Food and Sustainability Conference coming up on May 31 (it’s free!). As you plan your weekend, keep in mind that a lot of downtown will be blocked off to cars for the Capital City Half Marathon on Saturday morning and that traffic will be crazy on Sunday because of OSU’s graduation ceremony (featuring Obama as commencement speaker). Tania publishes her blog every Wednesday and it is full of local events, including tabs for Standing Events and Columbus Happy Hour locations.

Activist Alert! Sun May 5 Pre-Graduation Rally to Tell Obama: No KXL Pipeline 10:30 – 11:30 am
OSU students are calling on community members to support them in telling the President to protect our future and reject the Keystone XL pipeline. At a rally before graduation there will be student and community speakers, and will be cheering on students as they walk into commencement. Will you join us? Location: St. John’s Arena on OSU’s campus. Co-organized by the Ohio Student Environmental Coalition and supported by CREDO, Sierra Club, and Friends of the Earth — together we’ll send an unavoidable message from the OSU community that we can’t afford Keystone XL. You just need to come fired up and ready to go — there will be signs and visuals already on hand.

CoGo Bike Share Launching in Columbus this Summer
CoGo Bike Share will be the name of the Columbus, Ohio bicycle sharing system scheduled to launch this summer in coordination with the selected contractor, Alta Bicycle Share. The City of Columbus congratulates Benjamin Coifman for submitting the winning name during an online contest hosted by the Columbus Recreation and Parks. “Officially naming our city’s bike share system is a fun milestone in a project that is progressing rapidly,” said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. “Station locations are being assessed, pricing structures are being calculated and, soon enough, program memberships will be on sale.” Coifman’s submission was selected from nearly 200 entries and he has been awarded a CoGo Bike Share Annual Membership. CoGo Bike Share will consist of a network of 300 bicycles and 30 stations located throughout downtown Columbus. The system enables users to purchase access and unlock bikes for short, quick trips. Bikes may be returned to any station within the network. Ongoing program support will be generated by sponsorships and membership sales. Bicycles will be black with the COGO and City of Columbus logos displayed on the frame. Red panels on the front basket and rear fender will be reserved to feature sponsor logos.

Explore the Adirondack Mountains with Mountain Ecologist & Naturalist Michael Gaige June 23-29
Many of us know about the amazing work of Nancy Stranahan (and Larry Henry) in preserving the “Arc of Appalachia” in southern Ohio. Our native Appalachian forest was once connected to the Adirondack Mountains in New York, the largest most intact temperate forest in the world! Nancy has organized an awesome opportunity for those lucky enough to make this ultimate field trip… as she put it, “When you love your home forest, you want to learn as much about it as you can. When your home forest covers thousands of square miles, the only way to grasp its breadth it is to travel.” Past courses of the “Appalachian Forest School” have traveled to the forest centers of the Ozarks, the Florida Panhandle, the Northern Appalachians, and the Boundary Waters. This summer we are heading to the Adirondacks on what we believe is our finest natural and cultural immersion yet in our pursuit to understand our native forest home. We will be exploring our nation’s most singular, improbable and successful conservation story. The 6-million-acre park hosts over 250,000 acres of old-growth forest, 2000 miles of hiking trails (the nation’s largest network), and 3000 lakes. Bears are common, moose are returning, and occasionally a wolf or a cougar pass through. This is arguably as wild as it gets in the East.
Now imagine yourself (or someone you know) In the field with Mountain Ecologist and Naturalist, Michael Gaige, delving into the ecological study of the Adirondacks eco-systems; including the northern hardwoods, boreal spruce-fir forests, and wetlands, including bogs and fens. What makes the Appalachian Forest School’s courses unique? We perceive the temperate forest of the Eastern United States in its entirety, as the ONE immense biome that it is. We offer holistic cross-disciplinary education. We teach big picture forest literacy. We spend all day, every day, outside. Our courses are not only hands-on learning experiences but are fun and adventuresome. Registration Includes: Full six days curriculum, excellent meals, and six night’s lodging at historic Great Camp Sagamore on Sagamore Lake. See a pic here. Registrations must be in by May 15! Space is limited. Sign up now! More Information & Registration here. Like us on Facebook for daily photos & updates: . Please spread the word about this unique opportunity!

Earth Institute Conference “Cultivating a Community of Leaders” Held in Wisconsin July 18-21
The Northwest Earth Institute (NWEI) presents its biannual conference this year at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. Ellen Baumgarten will be representing Simply Living and we would love for others to join her! What does it mean to be a leader in sustainability? How can we transform our personal networks into communities of change? Simply Living has presented Earth Institute courses for many years, “inspiring people to take responsibility for Earth.” NWEI was founded on the belief that the solution to many of the Earth’s biggest challenges lies in the power of collective change: by taking action in our own lives and inspiring the people around us, each of us contributes to a world of impact. Learn more here and check out the brochure here. Contact Ellen Baumgartner at ellenb28@earthlink.net for more information.

Transition/Reskilling Activities & Workshops

Simply Living’s Transition Hub Promotes Reskilling – i.e., learning traditional skills that our grandparents knew from gardening, canning, sewing, sharing, bartering, and living simply. DIY – Do It Yourself is the approach that appeals to many young people as we all realize that strengthening our skills is not only useful and enjoyable, but is increasingly necessary to prepare for potential instability in the food system, power outages and disasters related to climate change, economic recessions, etc. The following items in the Calendar relate to this important trend.

Interview of the Week: The Trouble with Stuff: A Conversation with Annie Leonard
Annie Leonard is one of the most articulate, effective champions of the commons today. Her webfilm The Story of Stuff has been seen more than 15 million times by viewers. She also adapted it into a book. Drawing on her experience investigating and organizing on environmental health and justice issues in more than 40 countries, Leonard says she’s “made it her life’s calling to blow the whistle on important issues plaguing our world.” She deploys hard facts, common sense, witty animation and an engaging “everywoman” role as narrator to probe complex problems such as the high costs of consumerism, the influence of corporate money in our democracy, and government budget priorities. This interview in On The Commons offers her keen insights into how to liberate ourselves from overconsumption.

Video Clip of the Week: The Price of Carbon (by Climate Reality Project)
This is an excellent clip to reinforce the the “Fossil Fuel Resistance” movement organized by Bill McKibben and the Do The Math tour at 350.org. It’s past time for a real conversation about carbon pollution, and how much we are already paying. The science is settled: We know that carbon pollution from dirty energy is disrupting our climate. We know that as a result, we have greatly increased our risk of disastrous dirty weather events like superstorms on the East Coast, droughts in the Midwest (PDF), record heat in Australia, and rising sea levels swallowing islands in the Bay of Bengal. We know what’s happening, and we know why. But when talk finally turns to solutions, we always hear the same refrain: We can’t afford to do anything about climate change. Here’s the reality, however: What we really can’t afford to do is nothing. Watch this short video and learn why! Thanks to Sheila Fox for recommending this video.
